Vision, Mission & History

Center for the Sustainable Use of Natural and Social Resources (CSNR)

Centre for the Sustainable Use of Natural and Social Resources (CSNR) has been working for strengthening civil societies in the areas concerning sustainable development, which includes livelihood, peace, equity, equality and scope for growth and development for all. CSNR, as an agent of change is steadily engaged in building capacities of the community leaders, students and development workers, on how to use democratic institutions, mechanisms, norms and forums to redress grievance of the vulnerable, marginalized and the poorest among the poor. CSNR also facilitates regional and local level dialogues among the policy makers, CSOs, community leaders, students and others on various issues linked to life, livelihood and dignity of people, at risks and deprived due to social or economic reasons.

A just and environmentally rich society composed of sustainability, socio-cultural harmony and empowered communities with informed, dignified, mutually respectful individuals.

Mission

Empowerment of the most marginalised and vulnerable sections of the society so they can assert their rights and entitlements; have access and participate to functional community institutions; protect their own culture and identity; preserve their environment and livelihoods and contribute to peace-building in their region, ensuring both gender and caste/class equality.

Brief History

Chronology of important events:

  • 1996 - CSNR was registered as a non-governmental organization and began creating awareness among people on sustainable management of natural resources.
  • 1999- Engaged in humanitarian assistance after 1999 super-cyclone in Odisha and, thereafter, in disaster preparedness and mitigation activities.
  • 2005- Documentation and Monitoring of man-made disasters – societal conflicts & building awareness for peace & justice.
  • 2007 & 2008- Documentation & Monitoring of violence against religious minorities in Kandhamal district and campaigning for peace and harmony people.
  • 2008- Change in Organizational strategic to focus on human rights, conflict resolution & societal peace through awareness campaign for peace and communal harmony in Kandhamal district.
  • 2011- Training to human rights defenders and monitoring human rights violence in Odisha.
  • 2012- Founded Civil Society Platform on Human Rights (CSFHR) – a platform for 300 human rights defenders representing different areas of Odisha covering all districts.
  • 2015- Started working on police reform issues.
  • 2016- Integration of developmental intervention with human rights engagements.
  • 2018- Promotion of rights of marginalised and indigenous communities over forest and lands.
  • 2019- Empowerment of Marginalised communities through

    • Facilitating Slum Dwellers Access to Rights, Entitlements and Development in Bhubaneswar;

    • Improving accessibility of Persons with Disabilities to rights and entitlements

  • 2020- Continuing Empowerment of Marginalised communities through

    • Promotion of their rights over natural & social resources

    • Response to problems of marginalised communities during COVID 19 Crisis

  • 2021- Empowerment of Rural Poor and Marginalised Communities (Adivasis and Dalits)

    • Facilitating Access to Rights, Entitlements and Development in Bhubaneswar;

    • Promotion of Forest Rights among indigenous communities
